In Loving Memory

This foundation is established in the loving memory of two remarkable individuals whose values and vision continue to inspire us.

Prof. Shiva Kumar Sinha

Prof. Shiva Kumar Sinha

16 May 1936 to 5 February 2020

Philosopher. Teacher. Raconteur. A man who could make hours feel like seconds.

HIS BEGINNING
Shiva Kumar Sinha was born into a large family, of nine children whose father, Baba Kusheshwar Nath, served as a police officer in British India, moving across Bihar as postings demanded. Each new place enriched the experience of the young man who seemed to have arrived in the world already grounded. Responsibilities came early, as it does for children in large families, and with it came something rarer: wisdom, clarity, and an intuitive sense of what mattered. He became an anchor for his younger brothers and a solid, dependable presence for his sisters. He was a family man before he was anything else.

AHEAD OF HIS TIME
When he met the woman who would become his wife, in deference to her desires, encouraged her to earn the highest degree she wished for and to realise her dreams and potential. In the India of that era, this was unheard of. He inspired his daughters, and indeed all women around him, to reach further than the world expected of them. It was a demonstration of how he foresaw the unfolding world. Non-materialistic by nature yet with a taste for finer things, he moved through life with a rare combination of simplicity and sophistication.

A LIFE IN PHILOSOPHY
He built a teaching career that took him across Bihar: Koshi College, Khagaria; JRS College, Jamalpur; and finally, Punpun College, Patna, from which he retired as the Principal. He wrote his lecture notes in a beautiful hand and had the gift of weaving philosophical concepts into the texture of everyday life, so that his students left class feeling not that they had studied something remote, but that they had understood something true. His students remember him as “Sir” who could weave magic into dreary books, who travelled the physical and the metaphysical with equal ease, and in whose classes, hours would pass like seconds.

THE MAN HIMSELF
He was a man of considerable personal magnetism, warm and witty, with a mercurial quality that kept people on their toes. To sit with him was to lose track of time. Even an ordinary afternoon in his company always felt like something worth remembering. He was a master story teller, spinning magic and meaning. With his vision as the guiding spirit, The Foundation that bears his name shall carry forward the light he lived by.

Prof. Rita Rani Sinha

Prof. Rita Rani Sinha

14 August 1948 to 5 July 2018

Botanist. Teacher. Poet. Keeper of ordinary magic.

HER BEGINNING
Rita Rani Sinha was a brilliant student from her earliest years, matriculating with 1st division in the year 1963. She went on to pursue her I.Sc. and B.Sc. (Honours) in Botany from Sundarwati Mahila College, Bhagalpur, where her love for the natural world and its systems, its rhythms, its quiet intelligence found its academic home. Her doctoral research on medicinal plants was widely admired, a fitting culmination of a scientific mind fused with a poet’s sensibility.
Her love for nature found voice in her amateur poetry. An avid writer and chronicler of the everyday, she had a gift for finding the extraordinary in the ordinary, and for tying her finest thoughts to the world outside her window.

A LIFE IN THE CLASSROOM
She taught in JRS College, Jamalpur, BRM College, Munger, TPS College, Patna, and retired from Commerce College, Patna: four decades of dedication to students who still carry her words and wisdom with them. Today, her students are mid-aged professionals across many fields, and they remain in touch. They remember her as the teacher who could explain like no one else, with clarity, patience, and a kind of joy. She was generous with her time and knowledge, never withholding what she had to give.
She had a particular tenderness for her girl students, encouraging them to aim high and succeed at a time when that encouragement mattered enormously. The ambition she nurtured in others, she had quietly lived herself.

THE WOMAN BEYOND THE PROFESSION
She was a devoted wife, a fiercely protective mother, a loving grandmother, and a woman of remarkable fortitude. When the family was struck by the loss of her eldest daughter, it was she who held the grief and ensured the others could heal, processing their pain while carrying her own with quiet dignity. These were not small things. They were the measure of a life.
